Orange County January 2012 Job Report

|

The California Employment Development Division recently released its employment figures for January 2012. The January unemployment rate for Orange County was 8%, which was an increase from December 2011 rate of 7.8%. Orange County's unemployment rate was the third lowest in the state of California.

Orange County lost 29,700 jobs in January, leaving a total number of 127,500 unemployed persons. That number was up from 126,000 December 2011. However, the 127,500 is a decrease from a year ago where 146,300 people were unemployed.

Job losses by sector were as follows:

-Trade, transportation and utilities lost 9,400 jobs

-Retail lost 8,100 jobs

-Professional and business services lost 5,500 jobs

-Construction lost 1,400 jobs

An increase in unemployment in January is not unusual, as many December holiday workers are laidoff.
